The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses a biologically diverse region of ridges, valleys, and ancient mountains. The unique seasons of the park will astound you and your entire family. Expectations for natural wonder are more than met when you set out on a voyage of exploration and relaxation.
Summer
The heat of summer is lessened in the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains, making for great escapes from oppressive humidity and scorching temperatures. The air gets its haze that brought the mountains their name and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Splashing in a mountain stream, exploring the shadows of Cades Cove, or taking in the beauty on a waterfall hike are lovely respites. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with chances to see everything from black bears to rare birds.
Autumn
Vibrant colors expand across the horizon as warm days and cool nights invite. The skies clear and the rain chance lessens. It’s a great time of the year to take on some of the more challenging hikes while enjoying the splendor of the fall colors. It’s easy to see why this is the favorite season of so many who enjoy the Smoky Mountains. At the higher elevations, the color show can begin in mid-September. As the season progresses, vivid panoramas expand through the entire region. The park is home to around 100 different tree species and each lends itself to the color parade. Fall wildflowers add to the incredible natural display.
